When we’re designing family homes, our main objective is to create places where families love to live. We’re firm believers that how you feel in a space is the most important thing, so we design our homes to be as beautiful as they are functional so that the homeowners feel amazing every time they walk through the front door.
According to Three Birds Renovations Bonnie, her first decision in any room design is choosing a focal point. What will be the special ‘moment’ in the room that will create the wow factor and bring all the feels to life? Sometimes it’s a huge structural element like a void between levels of the home but sometimes it’s something much smaller like some beautiful brass handles to make the kitchen cabinetry shine.
These are some of our favourite ways to create a WOW moment in your home:
A Statement Staircase
Staircases are no longer just a functional fixture in the home… they’re a fabulous feature that can be a real design moment. If you’re looking to make a grand entrance in your home with some serious WOW factor, why not make your staircase the star of the show? Whether it’s designing a staircase that spans three levels (House 6) or a sweeping spiral, the sheer scale of a staircase is a guaranteed wow moment.
The Perfect Pendant
We’ve used pendants to create special design moments in entryways, over kitchen benches, above dining tables… heck, even in bathrooms! Pendant lights need not be expensive (but they can be!) so they can be a cost-effective option to create a moment in a room, even if you’re not renovating.
The Unexpected Bench Seat
We’re massive fans of the humble bench seat. They’re an underrated over-performer in our books! We’ve built them in walk-in-robes as a practical place to put your shoes on, in bay windows to maximise the seating space, we’ve added built-in coffee tables (House 12) and even done a double-sided version as an opening between a dining and lounge room (House 12).
Want a water view? Add a pool
If you’d love a water view but live miles from the coast, a perfectly placed swimming pool will do the trick. Rather than positioning your pool at the back of the yard, bringing it forward and incorporating it in a cohesive design that flows from inside to out will give you water glimpses from your windows.
Add Art
Similar to a pendant light, artwork can cost a bomb… or not too much at all. But it can definitely make a big statement and create a focal point to style an entire room around. We like to hang art off-centre and in unexpected places, like bathrooms, to make a statement.
